I have lived off the A line in Inwood for the better part of four decades, and I have made a quiet sport of proving that you can see half of civilization without ever paying for a car service. This is the itinerary I hand to visiting grandnieces and retired colleagues who think the only museum worth the trip is the one with the dinosaurs. Pack a paperback for the ride; some of these stops are worth the detour, and all of them are worth the walk afterward.
