This is the current state of the bourbon shelf that lives between my kitchen and my Kindle: the bottles I reach for when a Celtics game goes late, when a product launch goes sideways, or when I’m trying to decode a weird plot twist with Coltrane in the background. Some of these are easy grocery-store grabs, some I squirrel away when I see them, but every one has earned its square inch of cabinet real estate and at least one long, probably overthought tasting note on my phone.

Buffalo Trace BourbonStraight bourbon, 90 proofWeeknight sips and introducing bourbon-curious friendsThis is the T-pass of bourbons: unglamorous on paper, weirdly indispensable in real life. Caramel, a little orange peel, just enough oak to feel grown-up. I pour this when I want something I don’t have to think about until the book gets boring.
Eagle Rare 10 Year10-year straight bourbon, 90 proofSlow Friday pours when you actually closed your laptop on timeVanilla, cherry, and this dry, almost dark-chocolate finish that makes me slow down whether I want to or not. When I can find it at a sane price, it’s my ‘reward for answering all my emails like an adult’ bottle.
Four Roses Single BarrelSingle barrel bourbon, 100 proofSolo pours with jazz and no Slack notificationsHigh-rye, high-personality. Lots of baking spice and fruit; it’s like drinking the good part of apple pie without the sugar crash. Each barrel’s a little different, which scratches the collector itch without requiring a second mortgage.
Elijah Craig Small BatchSmall batch bourbon, 94 proofBackup ‘house pour’ when the Buffalo Trace is mysteriously goneToasty oak, brown sugar, a bit of peanut shell — comfortable in the same way as that hoodie you pretend you don’t wear to Zoom calls. I reach for this when I’m half-reading, half-watching highlights and fully ignoring my to-do list.
Russell’s Reserve 10 Year10-year small batch bourbon, 90 proofLong catch-up conversations that keep refilling themselvesThis tastes like Wild Turkey 101 put on a blazer. Still has that Turkey spice, but smoothed out with more vanilla and oak. It’s an easy crowd-pleaser, especially with friends who claim they’re ‘more of a wine person.’
Old Forester 1920 Prohibition StyleStraight bourbon, 115 proofWhen the plot twist hits and you need something with backboneChocolate, dark fruit, and a little burnt sugar in the best way — like the corner brownie piece. Despite the proof, it’s surprisingly sippable if you’re not shy about a little heat. My go-to when the Celtics go to OT and I’m in too deep to switch to water
Maker’s Mark 46Stave-finished wheated bourbon, 94 proofSoft, slightly fancy-feeling pours with good takeoutAll the friendly, bready sweetness of regular Maker’s, but with extra vanilla and baking spice from the staves. It’s my sushi-and-bourbon pairing bottle, which I will defend as a valid life choice until proven otherwise.
Knob Creek 9 Year9-year small batch bourbon, 100 proofClassic Old Fashioneds and mildly existential Sunday nightsBig oak, roasted nuts, and a little maple syrup vibe. It’s sturdy enough to stand up in cocktails but interesting enough neat. I pour this when I’m reorganizing my bookshelf instead of dealing with my inbox.
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight BourbonStraight bourbon, 90.4 proofSharing with mixed company (bourbon nerds and casual sippers)Balanced in that ‘everyone will think this is good’ way: caramel, citrus, a little oak tannin to keep it from feeling like dessert. This is the bottle I bring when I don’t know who else will be at the table.
