Bookshops worth the detour

Running an events spreadsheet by day means I'm always hunting for the one bookshop that'll make a Saturday feel like an occasion. These are the ones I keep dragging mates to after a gallery opening — some are five minutes from my sofa in Walthamstow, some are a proper Victoria line mission. Backstory in Balham just scooped London's Independent Bookshop of the Year, so that's firmly on my list for the next wine-and-browse outing. Verdict column is my honest take, no PR fluff!

1Public Knowledge Books90 Hoe Street, London E17 4QSLondonMy actual local! Zines, small press, under-the-radar voices — I pop in weekly and always leave skint.
2Brick Lane Bookshop166 Brick Lane, London E1 6RULondonGo-to for a quick gift when I'm dragging someone to a Brick Lane opening. Queues out the door for a reason.
3Libreria65 Hanbury Street, London E1 5JPLondonNo signage, mirrors everywhere, books sorted by mood not genre. Peak aesthetic, bring your camera.
4Pages of Hackney70 Lower Clapton Road, London E5 0RNLondonBasement secondhand stash is criminally underrated, plus the vinyl crate downstairs eats my budget every time.
5Daunt Books Marylebone83-84 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 4QWLondonThe interior alone is worth the Central line trek. Travel section arranged by country, be still my spreadsheet heart.
