A guidance counselor's tote bag is basically a moving library—between subway rides, lunch duty, and the 4 train to Citi Field when the Mets need me (they always need me), these are the ones I kept pressing into other people's hands. No syllabus energy here, just the stuff that actually kept me reading past my stop.

NameBookWhy I loved it
1Trust by Hernan DiazTrust by Hernan DiazFour versions of the same Manhattan fortune and I still gasped at the last one. Read it on the LIRR and missed my stop, TWICE.
2Demon Copperhead by Barbara KingsolverDemon Copperhead by Barbara KingsolverEvery counselor should read this one. Broke my heart in the specific way only a kid who deserved better can break it.
3The Great Believers by Rebecca MakkaiThe Great Believers by Rebecca MakkaiCried on a bench in Central Park finishing this. Worth the looks I got from passing joggers.
4Age of Vice by Deepti KapoorAge of Vice by Deepti KapoorPure plot adrenaline. I recommend it to anyone who says they 'don't have time to read'—you'll make time.
5Klara and the Sun by Kazuo IshiguroKlara and the Sun by Kazuo IshiguroQuiet and devastating, the way the best sci-fi always is. Made me hug my students a little longer at pickup.
6The Song of Achilles by Madeline MillerThe Song of Achilles by Madeline MillerYes, everyone's already told you to read this. Everyone is right. I wept on the 7 train, no shame.
7Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle ZevinTomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle ZevinAbout friendship and ambition and never quite growing up right. Gave it to three different friends this year.
