Bottles I'd order again

The list that lives on my phone for the exact second a friend texts "wine shop recs?" (which, if you know me, is often). These are the places in Queens and Manhattan where I've spent an unreasonable amount of a teacher's salary building actual relationships with the people behind the counter — the kind who remember you liked the orange wine from Jura, or that you're bringing something to your sister's engagement thing. I go in for one bottle and leave forty minutes later having learned something (and with three bottles, obviously). Shoutout to the shops that let you taste before you commit — a girl on a counselor's budget cannot afford a bad decision on a Tuesday.

1Astor Wines & Spirits399 Lafayette StreetNew York, NYThe wine equivalent of the Strand — you go in for one thing and surface an hour later with a cart. Best staff recs in the city, full stop.
2Chambers Street Wines148 Chambers StreetNew York, NYTiny, serious, slightly intimidating in the best way. Ask for anything low-intervention and watch someone's whole face light up.
3Discovery Wines621 Hudson StreetNew York, NYTaste-before-you-buy is the whole concept and it should honestly be mandatory citywide. Perfect for a post-museum wander through the West Village.
4Crush Wine & Spirits153 East 57th StreetNew York, NYWhere I go when I need to look like I know what I'm doing in front of a date's parents. Staff will not let you embarrass yourself.
