Not a syllabus, just the stuff I keep coming back to when I want to think clearly about how things work — buildings, ice, systems under load. Half of these I first read on a night shift with coffee going cold. No fluff, no citation-count flexing, just papers that earned their keep like a good boiler earns its keep in February.

A Mathematical Theory of Communication (Shannon, 1948)Shannon's 1948 Bell System Technical Journal paper founding information theoryInformation theory / engineeringGuy basically wired the whole building before anyone else knew there was a building. Read it slow, it rewards you.
Steady-State Heat Conduction in Multi-Layer Walls (ASHRAE fundamentals research lineage)Foundational ASHRAE-cited work on multi-layer wall conduction and thermal resistance modelingBuilding science / thermodynamicsThis is the stuff that actually explains why the east stairwell is always cold. Dry as toast, useful as a wrench.
The Logic of Collective Action (Olson, 1965)Olson's foundational work on group incentives and free-rider problemsPolitical economyExplains every union meeting and every line-change argument I've ever sat through. Free riders exist on ice too.
Random Graphs (Erdős–Rényi, 1959)Erdős and Rényi's founding paper on random graph theoryMathematics / graph theoryFeels abstract until you realize it's basically describing how a pipe network fails. Then it clicks hard.
An Economic Theory of Democracy (Downs, 1957) journal synthesisDowns's work modeling voter and party behavior as rational choicePolitical scienceCold, mechanical, kind of depressing. Like watching a coach manage a bench purely by analytics with no feel for momentum.
On Computable Numbers (Turing, 1936)Turing's paper defining computability and the theoretical machine that bears his nameMathematics / computer scienceEverything downstream of this paper is basically plumbing off one really good idea. Worth the slog.
The Tragedy of the Commons (Hardin, 1968)Hardin's Science essay on shared-resource depletion and overuse incentivesEnvironmental economicsEvery shared boiler room, every pond hockey rink nobody resurfaces — this paper called it decades early.
Fatigue of Metals Under Repeated Stress (Wöhler curve research tradition)August Wöhler's 19th-century research establishing S-N fatigue curves for metal under cyclic loadMechanical engineeringOld but it never stops being right. Every failed bracket in this city fails exactly the way this predicts.
Team Cohesion and Performance in Sport (meta-analytic sport psychology literature)Meta-analytic sport psychology research linking team cohesion to on-ice/on-field performance outcomesSport psychologyConfirms what any beer-league captain already knows: chemistry beats talent more often than the front office admits.
