I've spent thirty years adjusting claims for fires and burst pipes, which means I've seen the inside of every bar in this city when something's gone wrong with it. These are the ones that got it right before anything ever went sideways, the ones I hit after the hill walk when my knees need a reason to sit down and my dog needs a water bowl under the table. Anyway, where was I. This is just a list of rooms in this town where the music is real and the bartender knows your order, give or take a few blocks from Cortland.

1The Lucky Horseshoe453 Cortland AveSan FranciscoBluegrass, blues jamsTechnically my living room since it's three blocks from my actual one. Sunday bluegrass has fixed more bad weeks than my therapist ever did.
2Wild Side West424 Cortland AveSan FranciscoEclectic, local actsGreat backyard, stranger conversations, occasional guitar player who showed up uninvited and stayed anyway. Nobody minds.
3The Royal Cuckoo3202 Mission StSan FranciscoOrgan jazz, soulThere's a Hammond organ in there and a bartender who treats pouring whiskey like a sacrament. I've cried a little in that red light and I'm not ashamed.
