Bottles worth the walk

Twenty years up on the hill teaches you two things: patience, and the shortest line from a good bottle to your porch is rarely a straight one. These are the shops I actually stop at, the ones where the guy behind the counter remembers what you bought last time and doesn't try to upsell you on it. No tasting-room theater here, no cellar tours. Just places that keep the shelves honest and the lights on past dark.

1The Epicurean Trader401 Cortland Ave, San Francisco, CA 94110Bernal HeightsSmall footprint, good instincts. I go in for a Tuesday bottle and come out with something I'd never have picked myself.
2Bottle Bacchanal4126 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94114CastroNatural and low-intervention bottles, curated tight. Good stop before a Castro matinee.
3Ruby Wine1419 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94107Potrero HillTiny room, big opinions, all of them useful. Tell them what you like and let the system route itself.
4Healthy Spirits2299 15th St, San Francisco, CA 94114CastroStarted as a beer shop, still runs like one, but the wine aisle has gotten serious. Deep inventory, no attitude.
