Twenty years up by Bernal Hill and I still work a bookstore stop into most errands, same as checking a weld before you sign off on it. These are the shops I actually walk into, not the ones on somebody's map. Prices go up, chains come and go, these places just keep the lights on and the shelves honest.

1Dog Eared Books	900 Valencia St	San Francisco	Mission staple since the early nineties. Good bones, no pretense, staff that reads what they sell.
2City Lights Bookstore	261 Columbus Ave	San Francisco	A landmark that still functions like a working shop, not a museum. That's the hard part of engineering, too — keep it standing and keep it useful.
3Green Apple Books	506 Clement St	San Francisco	Been expanding since 1967 and never lost the creak in the floorboards. Takes a whole Saturday if you let it.
4Bird & Beckett Books and Records	653 Chenery St	San Francisco	Books up front, jazz most weekends in back. Closest thing Glen Park has to a town square.
