A structural engineer's museum list is basically a survey of things that haven't fallen down yet, which I respect. These are the ten I actually return to between renovation disasters in Gowanus (load-bearing wall, don't ask). Ranked loosely by how much they make me want to quit and become a conservator instead.

The Skyscraper Museum39 Battery PlNew YorkManhattanStructural nerds, model builders45 minutesA whole museum about load paths and nobody at my dinner table believes me when I say it's a date spot (it is not, but I've tried).
New York Transit Museum99 Schermerhorn StBrooklynBrooklynSubway obsessives, vintage car fans1.5 hoursA decommissioned subway station turned museum, which is the kind of adaptive reuse I wish my landlord understood.
Museum of the Moving Image36-01 35th AveAstoria, QueensQueensFilm nerds, arcade nostalgics2.5 hoursThe vintage arcade room is load-bearing for my mental health (not an engineering term, just felt right).
The Metropolitan Museum of Art1000 Fifth AveNew YorkManhattanEverything, basicallyHalf a day minimumToo big to finish in one visit, which I've decided is a feature, like a project with no fixed scope.
Museum of the City of New York1220 Fifth AveNew YorkManhattanCity history, old maps1.5 hoursGood for arguing with friends about whether a neighborhood 'used to be better' using actual historical evidence instead of vibes.
