2J.P. Licks	659 Centre St	Boston	In-house roasted coffee, ice cream	Ample, counter and tables	Roasting their own beans since 1999. The ice cream gets the headlines but the coffee holds its own.
3The Square Root	713 South St	Boston	Espresso drinks, weekend brunch	Moderate, village-square vibe	Worth the extra ten minutes past JP into Roslindale. One of the better-run rooms in the city, full stop.
4The VU	1223 Columbus Ave	Boston	Small-batch coffee, homemade pastries	Cozy, shares space with DVD rentals	Boston's last video store doubles as a coffee shop. A 0% chance this concept works anywhere else.
