Look, I appraise real estate for a living, which means I spend an unreasonable amount of time staring at square footage and asking myself what a building is actually for. Galleries are the one commercial use that still makes sense to me emotionally, if not on a cap rate basis. Here's the thing about gallery hopping in Chelsea on a Saturday: everyone thinks it's about the art, and sure, fine, it's partly about the art, but it's mostly about having somewhere free, quiet, and air conditioned to go before the Negroni starts calling your name around 4pm. This is the rotation I actually keep, not the one I tell people at parties.

NameAddressCityWhy
1Gagosian Gallery555 West 24th StreetNew YorkBig, loud, occasionally absurd in scale, like someone built a museum wing out of spite. I still go every time.
2Hauser & Wirth542 West 22nd StreetNew YorkThe bookstore alone could absorb an entire Saturday afternoon and has, on more than one occasion, absorbed mine.
3Pace Gallery540 West 25th StreetNew YorkEight stories of other people's taste, which sounds exhausting until you remember the elevator alone is worth the trip.
4The Drawing Center35 Wooster StreetNew YorkSmall, serious, dedicated to a medium everyone else treats as a warm-up act. I respect the stubbornness.
5Swiss Institute38 St Marks PlaceNew YorkOdd, a little restless, always showing someone you haven't heard of yet. Good for feeling behind on things.
6303 Gallery555 West 21st StreetNew YorkQuietly one of the better programs in the neighborhood, which is precisely why nobody's lined up outside it.
