A running list of places I duck into between chapters, mostly south of Hoe Street or a short Overground hop away (I tell myself it's research, my editor tells me it's a Tuesday afternoon problem) — small spaces I trust, neon temples I can't explain to visitors properly, and the odd big institution I still queue for like it's new. Updated whenever I finish a proof early.

William Morris GalleryLloyd Park, Forest Road, Walthamstow, London E17 4PPLondonGeorgian house turned Arts and Crafts shrine, free and unhurriedMy actual local, ten minutes from Orford Road on foot, go on a weekday when the tea room terrace is quiet and nobody's fighting you for the wallpaper archive.
God's Own Junkyard————
AutographRivington Place, London EC2A 3BALondonPhotography and identity, rotating shows that actually make you stand stillSmall enough to see properly on a lunch break, pair it with a wander round Shoreditch after if you've got the afternoon spare.
Whitechapel Gallery77-82 Whitechapel High Street, London E1 7QXLondonEast End institution with a history of launching careers before anyone else noticedJump on the Overground to Liverpool Street and walk it off, their free displays are worth the detour even when the ticketed show isn't your thing.
Drawing RoomNo. 1 Rich Estate, 10 Milkwood Road, London SE24 0JFLondonEntirely devoted to drawing, which sounds narrow until you're inside itQuiet, unpretentious, the kind of place where a volunteer will actually talk to you about the work if you let them, allow a proper hour.
