Nikon's been all over the news this week after their Small World in Motion contest winner got turfed out for using AI on the quiet. Proper mess, that. Got me thinking about the actual gear though, the stuff you hold in your hand and trust to just work, no funny business. Thirty years in engineering teaches you to rate a well-made tool when you see one, and these are the Nikon bits I'd point a mate towards without any hesitation. No AI shortcuts here, just glass and metal doing what they're built for.

NameTickProductTypePrice RangeMy take
Nikon Z8Nikon Z8Mirrorless camera£3,500 - £4,000Proper beast of a camera, this. Built like it'll outlast me, which at my age isn't saying much but still.
Nikon Z6 IIINikon Z6 IIIMirrorless camera£2,400 - £2,700Does nearly everything the flagship does for less brass. Sound choice if you're not made of money.
Nikon ZfNikon ZfMirrorless camera£1,900 - £2,200Looks like something my dad would've owned. Proper dials, none of this menu-diving nonsense.
Nikon D780Nikon D780DSLR camera£1,800 - £2,000Last of a dying breed and I'm not ashamed to still reach for a DSLR. Reliable as my old kettle.
NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 SNIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 SStandard zoom lens£2,000 - £2,300Sharp as you like and covers most of what you'd ever want. One lens, sorted for a day out.
NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 SNIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 SPrime lens£500 - £600Cheap as chips by Nikon standards and genuinely lovely. Start here if you're starting anywhere.
NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR SNIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR STelephoto zoom lens£2,500 - £2,800Heavy on the shoulder but handy at the match for getting proper close to the action.
Nikon Coolpix P1100Nikon Coolpix P1100Bridge camera£1,000 - £1,100Zoom on this thing is daft in a good way. Handy if you can't be doing with swapping lenses.
Nikon Z30Nikon Z30Mirrorless camera£600 - £700Grandkids would get on with this fine. Light, simple, no faff.
Nikon WM-1 Wireless TransmitterNikon WM-1 Wireless TransmitterCamera accessory£40 - £50Not glamorous but does its job without fuss, a bit like most good engineering.
