Right, this isn't a petrolhead list because I don't own so much as a Boris bike, but transport policy brain means I can't NOT clock the metal clogging up my bus lanes. These are the cars that make me go "ooh" while I'm stood at a red light wondering why the Overground's delayed again. Spotted mostly in the wild between Hackney and Zone 1, occasionally admired in a museum where they can't hurt anyone.

Name	Where I've spotted it	My take
1Mini Cooper	Parked wonky on every terraced street from Islington to Peckham	The original London car, basically. Fits in gaps a bus driver wouldn't dare try. Full respect.
2Black Cab (LEVC TX)	Everywhere, obviously, but especially prowling round Covent Garden at 2am	Not strictly a car I 'fancy' but you have to respect the Knowledge these drivers carry round in their heads. Legends.
3Jaguar E-Type	Outside the Science Museum's road transport bits, or purring through Chelsea	The one car that makes me understand why people cry over engines. Absolute striker of a design.
4Aston Martin DB5	Sat gleaming at the London Motor Museum type events round Kensington	Bond car energy. I know nothing about engines but I know this one's the captain of the team.
5Land Rover Defender	Mud-splattered outside farmers' markets in Borough, looking mildly embarrassed	So overqualified for London traffic it's almost funny, like bringing a rugby prop to a five-a-side.
6Routemaster Bus	Heritage route 15, rattling between Trafalgar Square and Tower Hill	Yes it's a bus not a car, sue me, this list is mine and it's magnificent and it counts.
7Morris Minor	Occasionally wheeled out for weddings near Hampstead, very smug about it	Looks like it's permanently smiling. Underrated substitute if the E-Type's transfer window is closed to you.
8Bentley Continental	Idling outside hotels on Park Lane like it's got somewhere better to be	Big 'bought a season ticket in the posh seats' energy. Doesn't need to try hard, that's the whole point.
9Ford Cortina Mk3	Car meets in Walthamstow, proud owners leaning on it like it's their mate	Proper 1970s London workhorse. The sort of car your uncle definitely had and definitely misses.
