When the bleep finally stops and my brain crawls out of Whitechapel, these are the places I triage first. Some are blockbusters, some feel like side rooms on a ward where the real work happens. All reliable for resetting the vital signs after a week of crash calls and corridor consultations.

Tate ModernBanksideInternational modern and contemporary, big immersive showsBankside, SE1 9TGLondonLike A&E on a Saturday: overcrowded, chaotic, but you see things here you won’t see anywhere else, and occasionally something genuinely life-altering.
Saatchi GalleryChelseaHigh-gloss contemporary, big thematic showsDuke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, SW3 4RYLondonFeels like walking into the private wing: pristine, well-funded, slightly unreal. Good for remembering art also lives in clean white rooms, not just peeling NHS corridors.
Hayward GallerySouth BankBold contemporary exhibitions, often concept-heavySouthbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XXLondonBrutalist bunker full of ideas. The shows can be dense, but so are discharge summaries—here at least you come out more curious than defeated.
Serpentine South GalleryKensington GardensCutting-edge contemporary in a small pavilionKensington Gardens, W2 3XALondonA nice reminder that daylight exists. Good to pair with a slow lap of the park and pretend your step count isn’t all from ward rounds.
Victoria MiroHoxton / IslingtonBlue-chip contemporary in an intimate space16 Wharf Road, N1 7RWLondonLooks deceptively small from the outside, like an ambulatory care unit, then opens out into something much more complex. Consistently good shows, minimal faff.
Gagosian Grosvenor HillMayfairMuseum-scale contemporary, big-name artists20 Grosvenor Hill, W1K 3QDLondonThe private hospital of galleries: immaculate, expensive, slightly intimidating. Still worth the consult when you want to see what the art world’s high-rollers are betting on.
