When you spend most of the week staring at monitors and juggling bleeps, you either find a way to burn off adrenaline or it finds a way to burn through you. These are the places that have kept my cortisol vaguely within normal range: some cheap, some not, all tried after long shifts when I should probably have been asleep. Expect sweat, mild DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness), and the occasional existential crisis on a bike.

Hackney Marshes CentreGrassroots football90–120 minutesHackney Marshes Centre, Homerton Road, London E9 5PFLondonSpiritual home of Sunday league and bad tackling technique. Perfect if you like your football with wind, mud, and the odd sliding tackle that would get you sued at work.
Mile End Climbing WallIndoor climbing & bouldering2–3 hoursMile End Climbing Wall, Haverfield Road, London E3 5BELondonOld-school wall with proper climbers and fewer Instagram poses. Forearms will feel like you’ve put a tourniquet on them, but in a good, non-ischaemic way.
London Aquatics CentreLane swimming & diving60–90 minutesLondon Aquatics Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E20 2AQLondonOlympic pool, Olympic lighting, very non‑Olympic level swimmers like me gasping in lane three. Great for clearing your head; terrible for hiding how unfit you are.
Lee Valley VeloParkTrack, road, BMX & MTB cycling60–120 minutesLee Valley VeloPark, Abercrombie Road, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E20 3ABLondonRiding the velodrome for the first time feels like consenting to controlled tachycardia. Adrenaline spike, legs screaming, brain oddly calm — closest thing to a legal upper I’ve found.
London Fields LidoHeated outdoor swimming45–60 minutesLondon Fields Lido, London Fields West Side, Hackney, London E8 3EULondonYear‑round, heated, and full of people who actually know how to swim. Excellent for shoulder rehab after too much laptop hunching; less excellent for your ego if you pick the fast lane.
Parliament Hill LidoUnheated outdoor swimming20–40 minutesParliament Hill Fields Lido, Gordon House Road, London NW5 1LPLondonCold water immersion, but make it North London. Feels like defibrillating your own sympathetic nervous system; you come out pink, shivering, and bizarrely optimistic.
Battersea Park Millennium ArenaRunning track & field45–75 minutesBattersea Park Millennium Arena, Albert Bridge Road, London SW11 4NJLondonStandard 400m track with bonus park views. Repeats here feel like supervised suffering — controlled dose of lactic acid before you go back to mainlining coffee at work.
