Charts between clinic notes and cortisol spikes, this is where I actually exhale; these are the spaces I dart to after a long morning in Hialeah or sink into on a Sunday when I should be reading JAMA but instead I’m letting color, concrete, and strange little objects do the diagnostic work on my own brain, from big waterfront temples to scrappy warehouses that still smell like fresh drywall and aerosol.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132Miami, FLDowntown / Museum ParkMajor museumGlobal modern and contemporary, strong Latin America and CaribbeanPaid, free select daysTourists, locals, kids’ strollers, breezy and busyLate Monday afternoon, before the bay turns goldFeels like a proper reset button; I walk in wired from labs and prior auths and walk out after one room of video or a Bedia piece with my shoulders down and my notes mentally re-ordered, plus the Biscayne light does more for my circadian rhythm than any a
Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami)61 NE 41st St, Miami, FL 33137Miami, FLDesign DistrictContemporary art museumCutting-edge exhibitions, sculpture garden, emerging artistsFreeQuiet, precise, fashion kids drifting throughLate morning before Design District shopping crowdsI come here when I want my brain scrubbed clean; the galleries are so crisp it feels like walking into an MRI of someone else’s imagination and the free admission makes it easy to pop in between a cortado and whatever experimental lunch I’ve promised myse
Nina Johnson6315 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33150Miami, FLLittle HaitiContemporary galleryThoughtful solo shows, design-adjacent work, strong curationFreeCalm, careful, people actually reading wall textLate Saturday morning before errandsThis compound feels like a tiny, self-contained argument for taking art and architecture seriously in the same breath, and I always leave with at least one image I can’t shake, which is more than I can say for most CME slides this year.
Emerson Dorsch Gallery5900 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127Miami, FLLittle HaitiContemporary galleryMiami-linked artists, sculpture and installation-heavy showsFreeNeighborhood regulars, serious collectors, no attitudeWednesday or Thursday lunch breakFeels like an old friend who grew up with the city; the programming is steady but never stale, and I like how often I run into actual working artists here, which makes my own complaints about clinic throughput feel a bit smaller and more manageable.
PRIMARY7410 NW Miami Ct, Miami, FL 33150Miami, FLLittle RiverGallery / project spaceConcept-driven shows, public art, cross-disciplinary projectsFreeLoose, experimental, people hanging outside talkingFriday afternoon before they closeThis is where things still feel a little feral; the work bleeds into murals and community projects, and it reminds me more of residency energy than a white cube, which is oddly comforting when my week has been nothing but protocols and checklists.
Museum of Graffiti276 NW 26th St, Miami, FL 33127Miami, FLWynwoodSpecialized museumHistory and practice of graffiti and street artPaidTourists, writers, kids posing by wallsLate afternoon after a Wynwood mural walkHonestly this feels like a necessary corrective to all the Instagram walls outside; once you’ve walked through the history, the tags on my commute read less like visual noise and more like a running, complicated chart note the city is writing on itself.
Piero Atchugarry Gallery5520 NE 4th Ave, Miami, FL 33137Miami, FLLittle Haiti / near Design DistrictInternational contemporary gallerySculpture, conceptual installations, strong Latin American programFreeSpare, meditative, staff quietly attentiveSaturday late afternoon, unhurriedI come here when I want to slow my pulse down without a beta blocker; the space is airy and the work tends to unfold slowly, almost like a good longitudinal study, and by the time I leave I’m usually ready to face another week of 15-minute appointments an
