Whisky is basically applied chemistry with nicer glassware, so it’s no surprise a medical device engineer ends up treating London like one big tasting lab. These are the places I actually go back to – post-Walthamstow commute, pre-quiz-night, or when an old car has finally behaved long enough to deserve a celebratory pour. Expect shelves of bottles, the odd incomprehensible cask code, and staff who can translate peat levels into plain English. Bring curiosity, a budget, and maybe a notebook if you share my tendency to “test” one dram too many.

Black Rock9 Christopher Street, London EC2A 2BSLondonModern whisky bar£10–£20 per dram, flights higherBasement, big oak table with whisky running through it – essentially a working prototype of my dream living room. Great place to calibrate your palate on styles you’ve never tried.
The Whisky Exchange – London Bridge88 Borough High Street, London SE1 1LLLondonSpecialist bottle shop£40–£120 per bottle depending how ambitious you feelIf Borough Market is food heaven, this is the liquid annex. Ideal for hunting a specific bottle or letting very knowledgeable staff gently upsell you into something better.
The Whisky Exchange – Great Portland Street90–92 Great Portland Street, London W1W 7NTLondonFlagship whisky and spirits shop£50–£150 per bottle; dangerous for the bank balanceFeels like a museum where you’re allowed to touch the exhibits. Excellent for nerdy comparisons – old vs new bottlings, independent vs official – and staff who enjoy the data as much as the dram.
Melody Whisky Bar153 Hammersmith Road, London W14 0QLLondonHotel whisky bar£12–£30 per dram; tasting flights pricier but funQuiet, grown‑up room with a seriously deep list. Feels more like a library for whisky than a bar – perfect for methodical tasting sessions rather than a big night out.
Boisdale of Canary WharfCabot Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 4QTLondonScottish restaurant with large whisky bar£15–£30 per dram; dinners firmly special‑occasionJazz, cigars, tartan, and a whisky list that reads like an exam syllabus. Ideal for impressing clients or pretending your Canary Wharf meeting overran into an entire evening.
