De La Hoya's back in the news feuding with Dana White (something about Vince McMahon, Ronda Rousey's WWE debut, and bad will-call tickets, the whole thing's a mess, go read it over a beer), so naturally I spiraled into Golden Boy's actual NYC footprint instead. Turns out the guy only fought twice at the Garden his whole career but this city's still littered with the trail, from the ring to the dive bars that'll show you the tape. Here's my running list, updating as I keep digging.

Madison Square GardenThe GardenNYC debut KO of Jesse James Leija, Dec 1995, then the Trinidad decision loss, Feb 20004 Pennsylvania PlazaNew YorkOnly fought here twice his whole career (wild for a guy this famous), but both nights are etched into Garden boxing lore, worth the subway ride just to stand under the marquee on a fight night
Gleason's GymThe GymOldest active boxing gym in the country, the kind of cathedral every champ of De La Hoya's era trained through or visited130 Water StBrooklynWalked in once during lunch break expecting a museum, got yelled at by a trainer for standing too close to the ring, 10/10 experience, go on a weekday morning
Jimmy's CornerThe BarBoxing dive run by the family of trainer Jimmy Glenn, walls covered floor to ceiling with memorabilia from De La Hoya's whole era140 W 44th StNew YorkMy go-to when I want a fight on the TV and don't want to pay Midtown prices, cheap beer, old boxing posters everywhere, feels like a time capsule off Times Square chaos
The Theater at Madison Square GardenThe TheaterOriginally booked here for his planned NYC debut in 1993 before that fight fell through4 Pennsylvania PlazaNew YorkSmaller room, same building, people forget this almost happened here two years before the Leija fight actually went down next door
