These are the bottles that have survived my friends, my moves, and at least three landlord inspections. All of them have spent time on my actual shelf in a one-bedroom walk-up where the smoke alarm is more of a suggestion. Some are easy pours after a Knicks loss, some are what I reach for when the MTA has personally offended me. None of them are perfect. That’s the fun part.

Buffalo Trace BourbonBuffalo Trace Distillery, KentuckyStraight bourbon90$30–$40 a bottle; $12–$14 a pourThe house red of bourbon. Shows up everywhere from Midtown steakhouses to East Village dive shelves. Caramel, a little orange peel, nothing jagged. I buy it when I don’t want to think, which is more often than I admit.
Four Roses Single BarrelFour Roses Distillery, KentuckySingle barrel bourbon100$50–$60 a bottle; $15–$18 a pourThe one I pour for people who say they “don’t really drink bourbon.” Floral nose, cherry and baking spice, then a neat little rye snap at the end. Tastes like someone actually thought about balance for once in this town.
Wild Turkey Rare BreedWild Turkey Distillery, KentuckyBarrel-proof bourbon112–116 (varies by batch)$60–$70 a bottle; $18–$22 a pourThis is the express track of my shelf: loud, fast, a little reckless. Big vanilla, brown sugar, and a decent punch of oak. Not subtle, but neither is the B train at rush hour and I still ride it.
Elijah Craig Small BatchHeaven Hill Distillery, KentuckySmall batch bourbon94$30–$40 a bottle; $12–$15 a pourThe weeknight engineer bourbon. Nutty, toasty, a little cinnamon. If I’m answering work emails after 10 p.m., this is probably in the glass, judging me but gently.
Russell’s Reserve 10 YearWild Turkey Distillery, KentuckyAge-stated small batch bourbon90$40–$50 a bottle; $14–$16 a pourReads like Rare Breed’s older, calmer sibling. Toffee, oak, a little leather. This is what I pour when the Knicks somehow win by 20 and I’m trying to process joy responsibly.
Old Forester 1920 Prohibition StyleOld Forester Distilling Co., KentuckyHigh-proof bourbon115$65–$75 a bottle; $20–$24 a pourChocolate, dark fruit, and oak in a trench coat. Drinks like dessert that decided to hit back. I keep it for snow days and overtime games that go somewhere weird.
