Places I end up when the clinic has finally stopped ringing and the Leyton Orient highlights have buffered to death. Not all of them are strictly fun, but they do a decent job of reminding you why we bother with the day job. History, pathology pots, a few quiet desks, and one very specific Soho pub… anyway.

Hunterian MuseumRoyal College of Surgeons of England, 38–43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PELondonIf you ever wanted to know what 18th‑century surgeons did for fun, it’s mostly in jars here. Great for perspective before moaning about QOF.
Royal College of Physicians Museum11 St Andrews Place, Regent’s Park, London NW1 4LELondonCalm, slightly austere, full of people in portraits judging your clinic letters. The garden’s a nice place to remember to prescribe a walk.
Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret9A St Thomas’ Street, London SE1 9RYLondonPre‑anaesthetic surgery in a church attic. After this, even our clunkiest EMIS template feels quite humane.
Florence Nightingale MuseumFlorence Nightingale Museum, St Thomas’ Hospital, 2 Lambeth Palace Road, London SE1 7EPLondonIf you’re tired of arguing about staffing ratios, go and look at where modern nursing started. Slightly humbling, in a good way.
Bethlem Museum of the MindBethlem Museum of the Mind, Bethlem Royal Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham BR3 3BXLondonMental health history, art, and the reminder that our ‘new’ ideas usually aren’t. Worth the trek when you need a longer view.
St Bartholomew’s Hospital Archives & MuseumNorth Wing, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, West Smithfield, London EC1A 7BELondonNine centuries of looking after Londoners, which makes a Monday duty surgery feel fairly small. Good excuse for a wander round Smithfield after.
