Every film studies major hits a wall of dense academic prose eventually and mine happened on the L train somewhere between Bedford and 1st Ave. These are the papers my professors keep assigning that I actually finished (mostly), the ones that made me yell on public transit, and the ones I'm still pretending I fully understood in seminar. Ranking these like I rank late-night pizza slices because honestly the stakes feel similar.

Laura Mulvey, 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975)Film theory / feminist film criticismThe one everyone name-drops in crit theory class like it's a personality trait. Read it twice, got mad both times, in a good way.
André Bazin, 'The Ontology of the Photographic Image'The Ontology of the Photographic Image (1945)Film theory / realismBazin basically says photos are a little bit magic and honestly after three espressos I agreed with him completely.
Sergei Eisenstein, 'A Dialectic Approach to Film Form'A Dialectic Approach to Film Form (1949)Film theory / montageRead this on the subway and missed my stop because I was too busy sketching diagrams in the margins.
Jean-Louis Baudry, 'Ideological Effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus'Ideological Effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus (1970)Film theory / apparatus theoryDense does not begin to cover it. Took four coffees and a highlighter meltdown to get through this one.
Siegfried Kracauer, 'Theory of Film: The Redemption of Physical Reality'Theory of Film: The Redemption of Physical Reality (1960)Film theory / realismKracauer thinks film redeems reality and honestly after a bad slice of pizza I need SOMETHING to redeem my day.
Christian Metz, 'The Imaginary Signifier'The Imaginary Signifier (1975)Film theory / psychoanalysisPsychoanalysis plus film theory plus me trying to annotate on the 6 train equals a bad time but a memorable one.
Linda Williams, 'Film Bodies: Gender, Genre, and Excess'Film Bodies: Gender, Genre, and Excess (1991)Film theory / genre studiesFinally a paper that talks about horror and melodrama like they matter. Felt personally validated as someone who cries at both.
Thomas Elsaesser, 'Tales of Sound and Fury: Observations on the Family Melodrama'Tales of Sound and Fury (1972)Film theory / melodramaMade me rethink every soap opera my grandma watches. Turns out there's a WHOLE THEORY behind why I cried during it.
Rick Altman, 'A Semantic/Syntactic Approach to Film Genre'A Semantic/Syntactic Approach to Film Genre (1984)Film theory / genre studiesExplains why every heist movie feels the same but in a way that made me respect the formula instead of hating it.
Miriam Hansen, 'Benjamin, Cinema and Experience'Benjamin, Cinema and Experience (1987)Film theory / modernity studiesWalter Benjamin meets cinema meets me squinting at footnotes on a Sunday when I should've been doing literally anything else.
