Right, so this is less a "top gigs" list and more the stuff I actually keep coming back to between seminars and match days. Manchester's got this ridiculous density of venues for a city its size — you can walk from a dissertation-induced breakdown to a decent gig in about fifteen minutes, which is more than I can say for most of my tutorial groups turning up on time. Half of these are proper institutions, half are the sweaty back-room places where you discover the band before your mates do and get insufferable about it. Ranked by vibes, not by any coherent methodology, much like my essay plans.

Band on the WallBand on the Wall25 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JZManchesterJazz, world, eclectic~350A proper mixed bill that makes you feel culturedExcellent, purpose-built roomThe one I'd take a visiting academic to, tbh. Northern Quarter jazz heritage but nobody's precious about it.
GorillaGorilla54-56 Whitworth Street West, Manchester M1 5WWManchesterIndie, alternative~550Mid-size touring bands on the way upSolid, if a bit boxy near the backSeen more 'next big thing' bands here than I care to admit went nowhere. Still love it.
YESYES38 Charles Street, Manchester M1 7DBManchesterIndie, DIY, new bands~350 (Pink Room)Finding your new favourite band before they blow upBasement room is loud and a bit rough, in a good wayThe Pink Room basement is where I've lost the most Tuesday nights I should've spent reading.
The Deaf InstituteThe Deaf Institute135 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HEManchesterIndie, folk, singer-songwriter~290Intimate sets where you can actually hear the lyricsGreat, small balconied roomOld lecture theatre turned venue, which feels a bit too on the nose given my life choices.
Night and Day CafeNight and Day Cafe26 Oldham Street, Manchester M1 1JNManchesterIndie, emerging artists~200Cheap tickets and Northern Quarter people-watchingDecent for a room this sizeSurvived a noise complaint saga a while back and it's still standing, which felt like a small win for live music generally.
O2 RitzO2 RitzWhitworth Street West, Manchester M1 5NQManchesterIndie, alternative, bigger namesmanages ~1500That sprung dancefloor doing genuinely weird things to your kneesGood, classic ballroom acousticsThe floor bounces. Actually bounces. First time is alarming, then you just accept it and dance anyway.
Soup KitchenSoup Kitchen31-33 Spear Street, Manchester M1 1DFManchesterElectronic, indie, DJ sets~150 downstairsBasement nights that run later than they shouldGood and loud, proper club sound in a small spaceGreat for pretending you'll be fine for a 9am lecture. You will not be fine.
New Century HallNew Century HallCorporation Street, Manchester M4 4FFManchesterAlternative, mid-size touringDecent size, a proper room without arena scaleA proper standing gig without the arena scaleSolid for a converted function roomUnderrated. Nobody talks about this one enough, feels like a hidden set piece in the city's gig map.
Albert HallAlbert Hall27 Peter Street, Manchester M2 5QRManchesterIndie, alternative, bigger touring acts~2000Genuinely stunning former chapel architectureVery good, that vaulted ceiling helpsCraning your neck at the ceiling instead of the band is a real risk here. Worth it though.
