These are the books I keep shoving into people’s hands after a couple drinks and a long rant about how nobody reads on the train anymore. They’re not “best ever” (relax), they’re the ones that have genuinely messed up my commute, made me miss my stop, or kept me in my seat at Penn when I should’ve been sprinting for tipoff at the Garden. Some are brutal, some are weirdly cozy, one made me text an ex at 1:30 a.m. (mistake), and all of them have at least one sentence that’ll sit in your head like a good hook in overtime.

Open CityTeju ColeLiterary fictionWandering, quiet, low-key devastatingA slow A or C ride when you don’t mind missing your transferFeels like walking alone at 2 a.m. with every ugly and beautiful thought turned up to ten; the plot is almost background noise to how precisely he nails that drifting city-headspace.
The Power BrokerRobert A. CaroBiography / urban historyObsessive, infuriating, weirdly propulsiveLong LIRR or NJ Transit hauls when you need a projectIt’s 1,300 pages about a guy who ruined half the region with highways, and somehow it reads like a thriller; you start seeing every bridge and parkway like a crime scene and can’t unsee it.
BelovedToni MorrisonLiterary / historical horror-adjacentLyrical, haunted, relentlessShort, focused rides where you can sit and recover between chaptersThis one doesn’t just make you cry, it rearranges the furniture in your head; Morrison’s sentences are so good it’s almost rude, and the emotional hangover is absolutely earned.
Invisible ManRalph EllisonClassic American fictionSurreal, propulsive, razor-sharpUptown 2 or 3, especially when the train randomly goes expressThe opening alone is a mic drop, and the rest is this wild, disorienting tour of American hypocrisy; every time I reread it, some new line jumps out and swings on me.
