Ok so this is the list I keep sending people at 1am when they ask where to actually see live music in this city instead of just doomscrolling gig listings on the N29 home. Compiled between edit suite shifts and dodgy chicken shop dinners, mostly places I've cried at, once literally in a church pew. Some of these rooms look like film sets before the band even walks on, which as a film student I find deeply, deeply unfair to my concentration.

1O2 Academy Brixton211 Stockwell RoadLondonBrixton, South LondonSweaty, cavernous, sloped floor so even short people see the stageAround 4,900 standingUsually £30 to £60 depending on the tourThe final gig scene in a music biopic, all sweat and confettiThat sloped floor is an actual genius architectural flex, my calves thank whoever designed it
2RoundhouseChalk Farm RoadLondonCamden, Chalk FarmRound brick shed that used to store train engines, now stores feelingsAround 1,700 standingVaries wildly, roughly £20 to £50Vocals hang in that dome like the docking scene in Interstellar, no notesMissed the last bus home after a gig here once and do not regret it even slightly

4Jazz Cafe5 ParkwayLondonCamdenBalcony dinner tables perched above a proper sweatbox dancefloorAround 450 standingTypically £15 to £30Basement club energy, like the cool down montage in a heist filmGet there early for the balcony or you're stuck behind someone's shoulder all night
5KOKO1A Camden High StreetLondonCamdenOld Victorian theatre with tiered balconies, dripping in gold trimAround 1,500Roughly £20 to £45 depending on the actThe ballroom scene in a period drama, secretly rewired for bass dropsThose horseshoe balconies make you feel like you're in an opera box watching a mosh pit
6Village Underground54 Holywell LaneLondonShoreditchConverted warehouse, exposed brick, low budget indie film set energyAround 700 standingRoughly £12 to £25 most nightsThe tube carriages on the roof are the quirkiest establishing shot in LondonNerdy fact I refuse to apologise for, those rooftop carriages are retired Northern line stock
7Electric Ballroom184 Camden High StreetLondonCamdenScuffed, loud, proper rock and roll dive energyAround 1,500 standingTypically £15 to £35The montage venue, where the underdog band finally plays a real stageSticky floors, dodgy sound in the corners, would still queue in the rain for it
8100 Club100 Oxford StreetLondonSohoBasement, low ceiling, decades of punk history soaked into the wallsAround 350 standingRoughly £10 to £25The archival footage bit in a music documentary, permanently stuck in 1976You can practically smell decades of gigs down there, in a good way, mostly
9OVO Arena WembleyArena Square, Engineers WayLondonWembleyFull arena spectacle, lasers, the worksAround 12,500Roughly £40 to £120 plus depending on tourThe wide angle hero shot stadium finale from literally any music biopicNot cheap, not intimate, but the bit where the whole room sings together still gets me
10Scala275 Pentonville RoadLondonKing's CrossOld cinema turned club and gig venue, multiple tiersAround 800 standingTypically £12 to £28It's literally an ex cinema, so I'm contractually obliged to love itOnce watched a gig from the old projection booth level and felt very smug about it
