My standing rule: if the weather’s trash or the Cubs are rained out, I’m in a museum. This is my core rotation — the places I actually end up at when I “just pop in for an hour” and somehow emerge three podcasts and a protein bar later. Big hitters, deep cuts, North Side comfort picks, and a couple of Hyde Park detours for when I’m already halfway to the Obama Center anyway. Screenshot this, throw it in your “rainy Sunday” folder, and text me when you get stuck reading wall labels like it’s your job.

Art Institute of ChicagoLoop / Grant ParkGlobal art, Impressionists, design111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603ChicagoGo for the Impressionists, stay because you accidentally turned it into a full-time job. Feels less like a visit and more like moving in for the day.
Field MuseumMuseum Campus / Near South SideNatural history, anthropology, fossils1400 S DuSable Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60605ChicagoPeak ‘I’m still a kid but with knee pain’ energy. Dinosaurs, mummies, and that very specific museum-smell that says ‘you will learn something whether you like it or not.’
Museum of Science and IndustryHyde Park / Jackson ParkHands-on science, tech, industry5700 S DuSable Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60637ChicagoIf chaos had a STEM degree. Kids everywhere pushing buttons, adults low-key hogging the exhibits. Plan to be overstimulated and weirdly inspired.
Museum of Contemporary Art ChicagoStreeterville / Near North SideContemporary art, performance220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611ChicagoFeels like walking into an extremely confident thesis project. Sometimes I don’t ‘get’ it, but I always leave thinking about something other than my inbox, which is the win.
Chicago History MuseumLincoln ParkChicago history, city culture1601 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614ChicagoRequired reading for living here. Great for piecing together why our transit map, politics, and baseball loyalties are all slightly unhinged in different ways.
National Museum of Mexican ArtPilsenMexican and Mexican American art1852 W 19th St, Chicago, IL 60608ChicagoFree, powerful, and surrounded by food that will ruin you for grocery-store tortillas forever. Exhibits feel alive, not like someone dusted them once in 1994.
Smart Museum of ArtHyde ParkUniversity art collections, global modern and contemporary5550 S Greenwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60637ChicagoQuiet, thoughtful, and very ‘I definitely read the footnotes.’ Feels like dropping into someone’s very well-edited brain on your way to the rest of Hyde Park.
