These are the beers that have survived multiple flat moves, heartbreaks, title challenges and at least three major spreadsheet overhauls. If I bump into you between Old Trafford and the Northern Quarter and we end up in some taproom triangle of Cloudwater/Track/Sureshot, odds are I’m pushing one of these across the table and starting a needlessly detailed chat about mouthfeel like it’s xG trends since 2013.

Sonoma Pale AleTrack Brewing Co.Hazy pale ale3.8%Manchester, UKPint on cask or schooner at the Track taproomPost‑match chips and gravy when you’re not ready to go home yetMosaic, Citra and Centennial; soft citrus, mandarin, light grapefruit bitternessMy midfield general: low ABV, never stops running, quietly runs the whole game while the big IPAs take the glory. This is the one I order when I’m pretending I’ll ‘just have a couple’ and actually mean it.
PintMarble BeersSession bitter / golden ale3.9%Manchester, UKHand‑pulled pint at the Marble Arch or a proper cask pubSunday roast or a pie that requires structural engineering to liftZesty grapefruit, floral bitterness, light pale malt sweetnessThe classic number 6 – sits deep, screens the back four, does all the dirty work while you’re chatting. If you want to remember the night and still drink ‘proper beer’, this is the move.
Manchester Union LagerManchester Union BreweryDecoction‑mashed lager4.8%Manchester, UKProper draught pint in a city‑centre barPre‑gig burgers, or that first pint when you’ve legged it from work to the tramRich malty body, touch of toast, firm but smooth bitternessIf Cloudwater Helles is tidy possession football, this is a diagonal ping to the winger – still controlled, but there’s a bit more swagger. The one I recommend to lager‑only mates to prove ‘craft’ isn’t all mango juice.
Epic WetsuitSureshot BrewingNew England IPA6.0%Manchester, UKSchooner or can – anything smaller than ‘regrettable’Late‑night Spotify rabbit holes and takeaway you’ll definitely spillIdaho 7, Motueka, Citra; big citrus, tropical fruit, hefty hazeThe luxury number 10 – every touch is ridiculous, probably on too much money, and you absolutely shouldn’t have three in a row… but sometimes match fitness is about making mistakes.
A to the KAlphabet Brewing CompanyAmerican pale ale5.6%Manchester, UKCan from a decent bottle shop or keg in a crafty boozerSpicy wings and someone else’s fantasy‑league meltdownColumbus and Mosaic; punchy tropical aroma, dry bitter finishOld‑school in a good way – like watching a 4‑4‑2 that actually works. Big hops, clear bitterness, none of the lactose nonsense. When I’m bored of fog‑machine NEIPAs, I reach for this.
