These are the bottles that survive my very scientific stress test: can I enjoy this after a long day of spreadsheets, during the fourth quarter, with whatever questionable snack combo is already in my kitchen. Not flex wines. Not cellar trophies. Just reliable starters and bench guys that overperform their contracts. If you’re looking for 100-point scores, that’s not this roster. If you want wines that make your friends say, “Wait, what is this?” while we’re arguing about usage rate, you’re in the right huddle. And yeah, I still mispronounce half the French ones. We play through it.

1Catena MalbecMalbec, full-bodied redMendoza, Argentina$18–$24Steak on the grill, thunderstorm rolling in, group chat arguing GOATs againThis is my “I promise I know what I’m doing” bottle. Dark fruit, a little cocoa, enough structure that it feels fancy without needing a suit and tie… or a decanter I don’t own.
2Bread & Butter Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon, plush and oakyCalifornia, USA$12–$18Burgers on the stove, game goes to OT, we pretend that’s why the bottle disappearedVanilla, dark berries, a little chocolate—like dessert without admitting we’re having dessert. Crowd-pleaser cab that tastes bigger than the price tag, unlike some contracts I could name.
3Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label BrutNon-vintage Champagne, dryChampagne, France$55–$70Promotions, birthdays, or when my team finally wins a series they were supposed to win weeks agoMy “we actually did it” bottle. Crisp, toasty, tiny bubbles that feel like a standing ovation in a flute. Pricey for a Tuesday, perfect for those rare nights the universe runs the right play.
