Books that have kept me company between Embarcadero and the outer avenues, the ones I’ve propped against a burrito, missed my stop for, or quietly side-eyed someone else reading (respectfully, of course). It’s a mix of fiction and non-, some a little heavy, some pure vibe, all good for disappearing into on a long Muni ride or a slow, foggy Sunday. Think of this as my current rotation rather than a canon; I reserve the right to change my mind the next time I get stuck in the tunnel.

NameAuthorYearVibeBest reading settingMy take
The OverstoryRichard Powers2018Quietly epic, tree-haunted, slow-burn revelationFoggy afternoon in Golden Gate Park, back against a big, unbothered treeStarts like a bunch of unrelated short stories and then slowly clicks into place; made me look up from the page at actual trees like they were side characters I’d been ignoring.
The DispossessedUrsula K. Le Guin1974Philosophical sci-fi, politics and feelings in spaceLong, slightly grimy commute where you can daydream about better systemsReads like someone snuck a poli-sci seminar into a space novel; I kept underlining lines and then realizing my stop was three stations ago.
Convenience Store WomanSayaka Murata2016Oddball, deadpan, quietly anarchicShort Muni hop with a coffee you’re slightly judgingSo small and so sharp; it pokes tiny holes in all the ‘normal’ life scripts without ever raising its voice. Perfect if your social battery is at 12%.
Never Let Me GoKazuo Ishiguro2005Melancholy, uncanny boarding-school memory spiralRainy evening by a window, preferably with lo-fi beats and questionable lightingCreeps up on you so gently that by the time you realize how dark it is, you’re emotionally invested and mildly devastated. Do not read on a day you already feel fragile.
AnnihilationJeff VanderMeer2014Weird, humid, ecological horror dreamHeadphones in, late-night train where everyone else is doomscrollingFeels like walking into a forest that’s quietly judging you. Short, intense, and perfect if your attention span is fried but you still want your brain scrambled.
PachinkoMin Jin Lee2017Generational saga, full-hearted and slow-buildingSeveral weeks of commutes, plus at least one long weekend where you ‘accidentally’ stay inThe rare long book that actually earns the page count; you end up caring about this family like they’re the group chat you silently root for.
Kitchen ConfidentialAnthony Bourdain2000Brash, behind-the-line kitchen chaosWaiting for takeout, trying not to think too hard about what’s happening in the backReads like your funniest, most chaotic friend finally spilling all their industry secrets. Also may permanently change how you feel about brunch.
Digital MinimalismCal Newport2019Calm manifesto for using your phone lessAny ride where you’d normally be scrolling through three apps at onceI didn’t turn into a monk, but it definitely made me more intentional about when I go online. Slightly preachy in spots, but the kind I kind of needed.
The Anthropocene ReviewedJohn Green2021Essay collection, tender and strangely specificChopped up across lots of short trips, one essay at a timeEach essay is basically a five-star Yelp review of being a person in late capitalism, but sincere. Great when you want meaning but only have ten minutes.
Thinking in SystemsDonella H. Meadows2008Gentle brain upgrade for how you see the worldThat liminal post-work ride where your brain is tired but still curiousYes, it’s the book every product/ops nerd name-drops, but it’s actually readable and surprisingly humane. After this, you start seeing feedback loops in your group chats.
