Basically my seminar notes but for venues instead of voting behaviour. These are the places I keep coming back to between dissertation panics and City away days. Ranked on vibe, sound, beer prices and whether I could actually hear the bassline or just felt it in my sternum. Non-negotiable rule: if the sound engineer's asleep, you're not getting a good score off me.

Band on the WallWent here for a 'quick pint and one act' and left three hours later having learned more about Afrobeat than my entire second-year module taught me about comparative politics.25 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JZManchester~350Jazz, world, soulDiscovering something you didn't know you neededFair, not cheap
Night and Day CafeThe Northern Quarter's answer to a seminar you actually want to attend. Sticky floors, honest sound, and the sort of lineup where you leave thinking 'right, I need to tell everyone about this band immediately.'26 Oldham Street, Manchester M1 1JNManchester~200Indie, DIY, new bandsCatching a band before they get bigStudent-friendly
The Deaf InstituteGorgeous old building, sound that doesn't murder vocals, and a balcony if you fancy watching like a detached political analyst rather than getting elbowed in the pit.135 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HEManchester~450Indie, alt, touring actsMid-size gigs with actual atmosphereReasonable
GorillaUnder the arches near Oxford Road station, so you can feel the trains rumble through the bassline. Genuinely one of the best sounding rooms in the city, fight me.54 Whitworth Street, Manchester M1 5WWManchester~700Indie, electronic, hip-hopThat perfect pre-arena band sizeAverage
O2 Ritz ManchesterThe floor genuinely bounces when the crowd jumps, which is either brilliant engineering or a mild structural concern I choose not to think about during the encore.Whitworth Street West, Manchester M1 5NQManchester~1500Indie, rock, big club nightsSprung dancefloor chaosStandard venue prices
Albert Hall ManchesterConverted Methodist chapel, so technically I've been to church more times than my nan thinks. Stained glass and a mosh pit is a combination nobody warned me about.27 Peter Street, Manchester M2 5QRManchester~1800Indie, alt, bigger touring namesGigs that feel like an occasionCity centre prices
O2 Apollo ManchesterArt deco place that's seen everyone from punk legends to whoever's blowing up on my Spotify Wrapped this year. Standing downstairs is the move, seats upstairs are for cowards.Stockport Road, Manchester M12 6APManchester~3500Rock, indie, comedy crossoverThat step up from small venue to proper tour stopBit steep
Manchester AcademyTechnically part of the uni, which means I've procrastinated dissertation reading by walking past it approximately 400 times. Academy 3 is the secret weapon for smaller, weirder shows.Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PRManchester~2600 (Academy 1)Rock, indie, student favouritesStudent loan-friendly big gigsUnion prices, so cheap-ish
