The places I duck into when I'm supposed to be on my way somewhere else, usually with a coffee already going cold in my bag. These are the Boston-and-around shops that have earned a permanent spot on my phone's maps — some for the stock, some for the smell, one almost entirely for a cat I am not going to name because then it gets complicated. Fair warning: I changed my mind about at least one of these on a second visit, and I'm not telling you which.

1Harvard Book StoreIndependent, not the university's, despite what the name tries to imply. The used basement has broken my tote bag strap twice. Worth it both times.1256 Massachusetts AveCambridge
2Brattle Book ShopThe outdoor dollar carts are where I go when I need to feel like a treasure hunter instead of someone avoiding her inbox. Rained on one of my finds once. Still have it.9 West StBoston
3Trident Booksellers & CafeI came for a novel, I stayed for brunch, I left three hours later having read a zine about mushrooms. Classic Trident.338 Newbury StBoston
