Civil engineer by day, so I can't help sizing up a terrace or a pitch drainage system wherever I go, but these are the spots that actually matter - where I've stood, roared, or just had a sneaky pint after a Crokes match. Dublin's spoiled for GAA grounds and this is the shortlist I keep coming back to, just saying like.

Croke ParkThe cathedral. Walk in under the Hogan Stand and even a hardened club man goes a bit quiet, like a full-forward lining up a free in injury time.Jones Road, Dublin 3Dublin
Parnell Park———
Glenalbyn / Páirc de BurcaHome turf, where I've trained more Tuesday nights than I care to count. Bar upstairs does a grand pint after a win, or a long face after a league loss.Glenalbyn House, Glenalbyn Road, StillorganDublin
O'Toole ParkTight pitch, tighter crowd, proper championship atmosphere on a county final night. No frills, just football, like a good low-maintenance bridge.Fatima Mansions, Rutland Grove, Crumlin, Dublin 12Dublin
Páirc Uí Chaoimh view from away———
GAA Museum, Croke ParkBring any blow-in down here and they'll walk out understanding the whole thing better than a season of explaining it to them myself.Croke Park, Jones Road, Dublin 3Dublin
Thomond Park away day———
St Anne's Park pitchesMassive green lung on the northside, loads of club pitches scattered through it. Sunday morning underage matches here are the engine room of the whole GAA, just saying like.Mount Prospect Avenue, Clontarf, Dublin 3Dublin
