Every retired librarian needs somewhere to spend her pension, and these are mine; a fair spread of grand reading rooms, musty shelves and the sort of shop where they know your name before they know your order. I've included the trusty Chorlton Bookshop, obviously, because what's a Beech Road morning without a detour past it; but I do like to wander further afield when the mood (and the 86 bus) takes me. Bring a bag, there's always room for one more.

Chorlton Bookshop506 Wilbraham RoadManchesterGeneral fiction, non-fiction and children's booksMy local, and I'll hear no word against it; they held the fort when a bar nearly saw them off and I'm forever grateful they did
John Rylands Library150 DeansgateManchesterRare books, manuscripts and special collectionsA proper cathedral of a place; I go for the hush as much as the books, and the hush there is extraordinary
Manchester Central LibrarySt Peter's SquareManchesterLending library, archives and local history collectionsOld loyalties die hard; forty-odd years stamping dates on tickets in a building this lovely spoils a person for anywhere else
The Portico Library57 Mosley StreetManchester19th-century subscription library and galleryEasy to walk straight past the door, which rather adds to the charm once you've found it and settled into a leather chair
