Honestly, this is the list I'd hand you if you caught me outside Piccadilly Records with a crate of vinyl and nowhere to be. These are the spots that soundtrack my weekends between soundchecks, gallery openings and far too many pints at the bar after. Northern Quarter leaning, obviously, but I'll hike for a good gig. Verdicts included because I've got opinions and I'm not shy about them!

Band on the WallLive music venue25 Swan Street, Northern QuarterManchesterHonestly the gold standard, that refurbed stage sounds unreal for jazz and world acts. Worth it, full stop.
YESMulti-room venue and bar38 Charles StreetManchesterThe Pink Room is tiny and sweaty in the best way, proper up-and-coming acts before they blow up. Rooftop pizza after is non-negotiable.
Night & Day CaféCafé bar and live music venue26 Oldham StreetManchesterProper scrappy charm, loads of bands cut their teeth here before getting massive. Always a laugh, never fancy, and that's the point.
Soup KitchenBasement club and bar31-33 Spear StreetManchesterBasement gigs that go proper late, sweaty and loud in all the right ways. My knees complain the next day but I'd do it again.
The Castle HotelPub and small gig venue66 Oldham StreetManchesterTiny back room gigs with a proper community pub vibe out front. Great for stumbling on a band you'll be smug about seeing early.
Albert HallConverted chapel concert hall27 Peter StreetManchesterStained glass windows looking down on a mosh pit, genuinely one of the best-looking rooms in the city for a gig. Always worth dressing up a bit for.
