Bottles I keep going back for

These are the wines (and the rooms that pour them) I find myself returning to after a long day of stabilizing silk or re-weaving a moth hole the size of a thumbnail. I tend to pick a glass the way I pick a thread — by how it catches light, how it smells before it tells you anything — and most of these places are close enough to the museum that I can walk there still smelling faintly of archival tissue. Half are shops where I buy bottles to drink alone with a crossword, half are bars where the pour comes with good light and better eavesdropping (one of them, Liar Liar, has become something of a Gowanus institution in its short life, and I will die on that hill).

NameAddressCityMy take
1Gowanus Wine Studio & Tasting Table257 3rd AveBrooklynRun by a woman who's been in the neighborhood two decades, which you can feel in how unhurried the tastings are (I once stayed through three pours and a tangent about biodynamic farming).
2Gowanus Wine Merchants493 3rd AveBrooklynOld World and natural bottles since 2012, and the staff will talk to you about sherry the way I talk about silk thread count — too long, happily.
3Liar Liar285 Nevins StBrooklynSteak frites and chilled reds under one low ceiling, bartenders spinning vinyl between pours — loud enough to forget I spent the day hunched over a quilt.
4Black Mountain Wine House415 Union StBrooklynLow light, small plates, and a list long enough that I've never ordered the same glass twice (there's something satisfying in a menu that outlasts your curiosity).
5Slope Cellars436 7th AveBrooklynMy go-to when I want a natural wine recommendation without the performance, like a quiet neighbor who happens to know everything.
6The Four Horsemen295 Grand StBrooklynA trek from Gowanus but worth it for a list that feels assembled by someone who actually misses the vineyard dirt under their nails.
7June Wine Bar231 Court StBrooklynSmall enough that you end up talking to the table next to you by the second glass, which is half the reason I keep coming back.
8Terre190 5th AveBrooklynEducated, unfussy staff and a list that rewards asking questions — I've left with homework more than once.
