I don't read as much as I used to, but these are the shops I'll actually detour for after I drop off a bike part or grab a coffee. Mix of new, used, and one neighborhood spot that's basically a public service. Most of these you can hit on a loop if you've got a free Saturday and don't mind the Mission hills.

Red Hill BooksBernal Heights401 Cortland AveSan Francisco, CAFive minute walk from my place, which is the whole reason it's number one. Solid used selection, no pretension.
Book CastleBernal Heights443 Cortland AveSan Francisco, CASmall, curated, kid section is legit. Good spot to kill twenty minutes while the espresso machine next door fixes my order.
Bird & Beckett Books & RecordsGlen Park653 Chenery StSan Francisco, CAThey do live jazz some nights which is a wild thing to find next to a bookshelf. Worth the BART hop.
Dog Eared BooksMission900 Valencia StSan Francisco, CAOpen late, which matters more than people admit. Been going since before I owned a house here.
Medicine for NightmaresMission3036 24th StSan Francisco, CAHosts community stuff, good energy. Not my usual genre lane but I always end up buying something.
Omnivore Books on FoodNoe Valley3885a Cesar Chavez StSan Francisco, CAAll cookbooks, nothing else. Sounds like a gimmick until you're standing there an hour later holding four of them.
Noe Valley BooksNoe Valley3870 24th StSan Francisco, CANot flashy, just a good neighborhood shop. The ceiling's painted and somehow that's the detail everyone remembers.
Green Apple BooksInner Richmond506 Clement StSan Francisco, CAThe one everybody namedrops and for once it's earned, running since '67. Basement is a labyrinth, budget extra time.
City Lights BooksellersNorth Beach261 Columbus AveSan Francisco, CAObligatory tourist stop that's somehow still good even after you've been a hundred times. Like a reliable closer, just gets it done.
Alley Cat BooksMission3036 24th StSan Francisco, CAGallery in the back is a nice surprise. Good stop on the same 24th Street crawl as Medicine for Nightmares.
