A list kept largely for my own reference, being the venues I return to when the claret cellar needs restocking of memories rather than bottles. Mostly jazz, I confess, with a nod to the concert halls for when the grandchildren visit and insist on something respectable. I keep score at Lord's each summer and these keep me occupied the rest of the year, but what do I know.

1Ronnie Scott's47 Frith Street, SohoLondonJazzThe velvet seats have seen better decades, as have I, but the music still arrives fully formed. A touch pricier than my pension prefers.
2The Vortex Jazz Club11 Gillett SquareLondonContemporary jazzRather further east than my usual orbit, but the programming rewards the journey. Bring an open mind and a cushion.
3Café OTO18-22 Ashwin StreetLondonExperimental and free jazzOccasionally baffling, which I suspect is rather the point. I nod along knowingly and hope no one asks my opinion.
