Where I Watch Things

If I’m not in the library pretending to write my thesis, I’m in one of these places pretending to know what ‘expected goals’ actually means. This is my very unscientific map of where I drift between rugby at the Aviva, GAA epics, and whatever random Tuesday-night Serie A the Woolshed has on. Heavy on big screens, reliable pints, and the kind of people-watching you only get when a table of lads is screaming at a bet they definitely shouldn’t have put on.

1Aviva StadiumLansdowne Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, D04 K5F9DublinInternational rugby, Ireland football, big cup nightsEvening kick-offs when the lights are on and everyone’s sprinting from workFeels like half the country shows up, half of them late because they ‘misjudged’ pints in town. Great for spotting dads in old jerseys loudly coaching from row Z.
2Croke ParkJones Road, Dublin 3, D03 P6K7DublinGAA headquarters, All-Ireland finals, concerts on the sideSummer Sundays when everyone in the ground seems related to someone on the pitchPeak anthropology: counties screaming at each other, children wielding flags like weapons, and you trying to remember the last time you successfully soloed a ball.

Everyone has an opinion, nobody has defending, and there’s always one lad revising between matches. Sometimes that’s me.
