These are the PDFs I end up reopening at 1:17 a.m. when I was allegedly just “checking one thing.” A little stats, a little psych, a little media theory, some econ, some computer science—basically the intellectual equivalent of watching game tape and director’s commentary at the same time. None of this is light beach reading, but every one of these papers has at least one paragraph that made me stop, stare, and mutter, “Okay, that’s annoyingly brilliant.”

11The Tragedy of the CommonsEnvironmental science / economics1968Garrett HardinIndividually rational use of shared resources can collectively destroy them without some form of coordination or rules.Once you see “commons logic,” you start spotting it in subway crowds, inboxes, and shared docs.Thinking about climate, infrastructure, or why the office kitchen is always a mess.Short, pointed, and easy to summarize over coffee.Bleak but clarifying; like a very stern coach explaining why your scheme won’t work.Great citation when arguing for guardrails instead of “just be considerate” policies.
12Deep Residual Learning for Image RecognitionMachine learning / computer vision2015Kaiming HeIntroduces residual networks (ResNets), using skip connections to train very deep neural nets effectively. The trick is conceptually simple but unlocked a whole new performance tier—my favorite kind of hack.Getting a feel for how modern deep nets are actually architected, not just buzzworded.Conference‑paper length; figures and results tables do heavy lifting.Efficient, empirical, no drama—just “here’s a clever idea and the leaderboard receipts.”Referencing ResNets when someone says “AI is basically magic” is deeply therapeutic.
