If I’m not hunched over CAD or crammed into a Green Line car with a book, odds are I’m at one of these spots pretending I’m a D1 athlete. This is my personal circuit of Boston-area fields, rinks, and gyms — from screaming myself hoarse at pro games to very humbling pick‑up nights and bouldering flails. Pack layers, bring a water bottle, and for the love of your knees, don’t skip the warm‑up.

TD GardenPro arena – Celtics/Bruins100 Legends WayBoston, MALoud, polished, very ‘big night out’Where I go to lose my voice and my sense of fiscal responsibility on nosebleed seats and chicken tenders. Take the T to North Station, get in early, and spend way too long debating which jersey you’d buy if you were a different, richer person.
Fenway ParkMLB ballpark – Red Sox4 Jersey StBoston, MAClassic, cramped, ridiculously charmingYes, the seats are tiny, yes, the sightlines are weird, and yes, it’s still magic under the lights. I’ll grab a sausage on Lansdowne, keep score like a nerd, and argue about whether that ball would be a routine fly anywhere but here.
Warrior Ice ArenaIce rink – Bruins practice facility90 Guest StreetBoston, MAShiny, corporate, hockey-obsessedSkating where the Bruins practice is wildly motivating (and mildly humbling) when you’re still working on your backward crossovers. I love grabbing coffee at Boston Landing after and pretending I, too, have a pro-level recovery routine.
Boston Common Frog PondSeasonal outdoor rink / spray pool139 Tremont StBoston, MAStorybook winter, splashy summerIn winter, this is peak "main character" energy — city skyline, twinkle lights, and you trying not to wipe out in front of a date. In summer it flips to pure kid chaos with the spray pool, which is ideal if you’ve mentally tapped out of adulting for the d
Melnea A. Cass Recreation CenterIndoor sports & community center120 Martin Luther King Jr. BlvdRoxbury, MANeighborhood hub, no-frills, all heartThis is where you remember sports don’t have to be fancy to be fun. Big multi-use gym, community programs, and the kind of pick‑up where someone’s uncle is casually hitting skyhooks like it’s 1986.
BU Fitness & Recreation CenterUniversity gym & pool complex915 Commonwealth AveBoston, MAMassive, student-packed sports playgroundIf you somehow can’t find a way to move here, that’s a you problem: climbing wall, courts, pool, track, the works. I sneak in lap swims and then immediately cancel them out at T. Anthony’s like a responsible adult.
BU Track & Tennis CenterIndoor track & tennis facility100 Ashford StAllston, MASerious runners, squeaky shoes, fast vibesRunning on that banked 200m track makes me feel like I’ve been drafted into some futuristic track league. Great for winter speed work, assuming you don’t get lapped by what is clearly a small, very fast gazelle in BU gear.
Harrington Athletics VillageCollege baseball/softball complex2125 Commonwealth AveBrighton, MATidy college fields with big-league dreamsWhen I want pure baseball without the Fenway chaos, I’ll head up here for a BC game. Good sightlines, easy Green Line access, and you can actually hear the dugout chirping — which is half the fun if you’re a sports nerd like me.
