Eight books that earned a permanent spot on the shelf, picked the way I'd pick a lineup: proven performers over flashy rookies. Some are Chicago through and through, others just happened to be what I was reading on the Metra. Verdict column included because I've never once kept an opinion to myself.

Chicago Reading List — 4 items
Name	Author	Verdict
1The Adventures of Augie March	Saul Bellow	Chicago's answer to a 500-page fastball, all swagger and sentence-length showing off. Worth the innings.
2Native Son	Richard Wright	Hard to read, harder to put down, impossible to forget. The South Side as unflinching as it gets.
3The Jungle	Upton Sinclair	Ruined lunch meat for a generation. Still the definitive account of what this city used to grind through.
4Sister Carrie	—	—
