Where I Get Distracted

My running hit list of Miami art stops, a mix of big museums and scrappy galleries I end up in when I "go out for one quick drink" and somehow wind up debating wall text. This is basically my brain’s map for a perfect Saturday: cafecito, gallery, Malbec, Heat game, repeat. Dropping the ones I actually go to, not the ones people flex on Instagram once a year at Basel.

1Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132MiamiDowntown / Museum ParkMajor contemporary art museumBreezy, architectural, very “I read art blogs”Out-of-town flex days and lingering on the terrace with the bay breeze$$1.5–3 hoursIf I tell someone I’m “by the arena,” I’m probably actually here hiding under those hanging gardens, pretending I’m the kind of person who always understands the video pieces (I do not).
2Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami)61 NE 41st St, Miami, FL 33137MiamiDesign DistrictContemporary art museumWhite-cube serious but still fun, lots of sculpture garden momentsFree culture hit before or after window-shopping designer things you absolutely cannot afford$ (free admission)1–2 hoursI come for the exhibits and stay to people-watch the Design District crowd while finishing whatever sad iced latte I grabbed from across the street.
3Rubell Museum Miami1100 NW 23rd St, Miami, FL 33127MiamiAllapattahPrivate contemporary art museumWarehouse labyrinth of hits, very Basel-coreDeep dives into big-name contemporary art and getting lost in giant installations$$2–3 hoursEvery time I go I swear I’ll be in and out in an hour, and then suddenly I’m in my third massive gallery texting photos to friends with zero context like, “This is how my brain feels in Q4.”
4Nina Johnson6315 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33150MiamiLittle HaitiContemporary art galleryThoughtful, design-y, low-key chic compoundSeeing smart shows in a space that feels like a secret, then grabbing food nearby$$$ (collectors’ gallery, browsing is free)45–90 minutesI always feel like I should’ve worn cooler shoes here, but the shows are consistently so good I forget I came straight from eating pastelitos in the car.
5Bakehouse Art Complex561 NW 32nd St, Miami, FL 33127MiamiWynwood / Allapattah borderArtist studios & gallery spaceIndustrial, messy-in-a-good-way, real working-artist energyOpen studios, wandering hallways, and seeing work mid-process$ (usually free or low-cost events)1–2 hours, more during open housesOn open studio days it feels like crashing a hundred different art parties at once—I leave covered in sweat, stickers, and five new artists to stalk on Instagram.
6Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)770 NE 125th St, North Miami, FL 33161North MiamiDowntown North MiamiContemporary art museumNeighborhood institution with surprisingly global showsWhen you’re willing to Uber a bit farther for strong curation and quieter galleries$–$$ (free/discounted for many; paid general admission)1–2 hoursEvery time I trek up here I wonder why I don’t do it more often—less chaos than Wynwood, more time to actually, like, think about the art.
