Okay so as an art history major who ALSO works part-time in a Chelsea gallery, I have opinions on museums, and I have way too many memberships to prove it lol. This is my ride-or-die list of the NYC spots that live rent-free in my brain, from the big Fifth Avenue heavy hitters to the scrappy Bowery gems that make my little gallery-assistant heart race. Bring comfy shoes, an open mind, and obviously grab a slice on the way out because a museum day without carbs is just not a museum day, literally.
MoMA basically raised me academically, no cap! Standing in front of the Water Lilies room gives me actual chills, it's giving pure serotonin. Post-museum move is always a hot slice from Joe's Pizza while you sit with your feelings.
The Met is that friend who has EVERYTHING going on and somehow it all works?? Egyptian wing, Arms & Armor, the roof garden bar in summer, literally never boring. I could live in the Temple of Dendur, no exaggeration.
Whitney has main character energy fr! Amazing American art, killer Hudson views from the terraces, and it basically feeds right into the High Line so your whole afternoon is a vibe walk. Big fan of their emerging artist programming, very gallery-assistant
That spiral ramp is architecture as pure theater and I am OBSESSED, Frank Lloyd Wright understood drama. The Kandinsky collection in there is unreal, I will stand in front of one canvas way too long, zero regrets.
New Museum is where I go when I need my brain rewired by contemporary art, it's SO current, always something making me go 'wait, what' in the best possible way. The blocks around it are stacked with tiny galleries too, perfect for a crawl.
As a Bushwick girlie I HAVE to represent Brooklyn! This place is massive and the Egyptian collection genuinely rivals the Met imo, don't tell them I said that. First Saturdays are the move, then hit a slice place on Flatbush after, obviously.
PS1 is MoMA's cooler, weirder younger sibling and I love it for that. The art in here is so experimental it gets my little gallery-assistant heart racing. Bring an open mind and comfortable shoes, you'll need both.
Not fine art but I contain multitudes! The dinosaur halls still make me feel like a little kid every single time. Central Park picnic after is basically mandatory, pack snacks and maybe a slice to-go.
The Cloisters is my favorite little secret even though everyone knows about it lol. Medieval art, unicorn tapestries, gorgeous gardens overlooking the Hudson, feels like a day trip without ever leaving Manhattan. Literally magical in fall.
