Nine bourbons I actually reach for after a 12 in the hospital, when the dog’s walked, the scrubs are in the hamper, and the pager is somewhere I can’t hear it. Nothing too precious, nothing that requires a ring light. Just dependable bottles with different jobs: charting, debriefing, or forgetting the code that didn’t go right. Call it self‑prescribed adjunct therapy with known side effects.

Bouteilles de nuit — 3 items
Name	Style	Proof	Price range	Best moment	My take
1Buffalo Trace Bourbon	Straight bourbon	90	$30–$40	Post-call debrief when you’re too tired to think	Baseline bourbon. Like normal vitals: reassuring, unexciting, missed only when it’s gone or marked up beyond reason.
2Elijah Craig Small Batch	Small batch bourbon	94	$30–$40	Slow sip while scrolling through lab results you can’t fix tonight	Toasty, peanutty, a little oak. Like the senior resident you trust to run the floor without you, with occasional rough edges.
3Four Roses Single Barrel	Single barrel bourbon	100	$45–$55	Rare quiet evening when no one from work is texting	Cleaner, floral, a bit elegant. This is what I pour when I want to remember that life has nuance beyond CBCs and CT scans.
