These are the shows I end up accidentally bingeing until 2 a.m., when I was absolutely only going to watch “one, maybe two, mate” before bed. They’re the ones that feel like cities you can walk around in – messy, overlapping, full of weird side streets and terrible lighting decisions that somehow work. Some of them are comfort pints, some are tactical gut-punches, but all of them have that “just one more episode” problem that kills any chance of a responsible bedtime. Basically: the stuff I put on when the tram’s been delayed twice, the match was a nil-nil slog, and I need something smart enough to chew on but daft enough to keep me company while I overthink street layouts.

NameGenreWhere to watch (UK)My take
1The WireCrime drama, urban ensembleSky / NOWLike watching a whole city’s transport, politics and dodgy wiring laid bare; moves slowly, but once you’re in, every shot feels like a planning document someone bled on.
2SuccessionDark comedy, corporate family dramaSky / NOWIf Shakespeare did board meetings and private jets; it’s just people arguing in glass boxes yet somehow has more atmosphere than most stadiums on a wet Tuesday.
3The BearKitchen drama, anxiety comedyDisney+The closest TV has come to capturing Friday rush hour in Piccadilly Gardens but inside a kitchen – all noise, stress and tiny human moments that wreck you a bit.
4AtlantaSurreal comedy dramaDisney+Starts like a music hustle story, turns into a city dreamscape where every side street has a bizarre side quest; perfect for midnight when reality’s already fuzzy.
5Mad MenPeriod drama, workplaceAmazon Prime VideoEvery office shot blocked like a little architectural model of misery and ambition; looks sleek, moves slow, sneaks up on you emotionally by season three.
