Stuff I end up printing twice. Mostly primary care, a bit of policy creep, all vaguely related to the job of trying to sort real people out in ten-minute slots. Some are classics, some are just the ones that made me put the kettle on and stare out of the window for a bit… anyway.

Barbara Starfield, "Is primary care essential?"1994Why strong primary care systems matter for health outcomes and equity. The grandparent of all the "GPs actually do something" arguments. Good to wave at anyone who thinks we’re just gateway clerks.
Morbidity Statistics from General Practice (Fourth National Study)1995Huge survey of what actually walks through UK GP doors day to day.The one that reminds you guidelines are written for textbook patients, not the crowd in Monday morning surgery.
Barbara Starfield et al., "Co-ordination of care and continuity"2002Links between continuity in primary care and better outcomes, especially in complex patients.Every time someone says continuity is nostalgic fluff, I quietly think of this and book Mrs K in with the same GP again.
T.O. Athey et al., "Telephone triage in out-of-hours primary care"2002Safety and efficiency of nurse and GP telephone triage in out-of-hours services.Useful reality check when you’re 40 calls deep and wondering if any of this is actually safe.
F. Mair et al., "Understanding multimorbidity in general practice"2012How multiple long-term conditions complicate management in routine GP work.Confirms the feeling that the problem isn’t one big disease, it’s six small ones arguing with each other.
Chris Salisbury et al., "Impact of pay for performance in primary care"2010What QOF-style financial incentives did (and didn’t do) to care quality.Handy whenever I start wondering if I’m treating the blood pressure or the spreadsheet.
Iona Heath, "The mystery of general practice"1995Reflective essays on uncertainty, narrative, and the role of GPs in modern medicine.More philosophy than p-values, but good for those evenings when guidelines aren’t quite cutting it… anyway.
