People assume doctors drift through the city like consult notes: disembodied, efficient, and somehow everywhere at once. Reality is smaller. It’s a handful of buildings I can navigate half-asleep after night float, a museum I drag interns to when they start calling everything “septic,” and one library that still smells like paper and terror before boards. This is the medicine side of my Chicago—places where lungs get fixed, research crawls forward, and the coffee is usually worse than the outcomes. Read it like a call schedule, not a travel guide.

University of Illinois Hospital1740 W Taylor St, Chicago, IL 60612ChicagoAcademic medicine with fewer Instagrammable lobbies and more actual lungs to manage. Good place to find someone who still knows how to use a stethoscope instead of just ordering another CT.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital251 E Huron St, Chicago, IL 60611ChicagoShiny Streeterville mothership. When a patient tells me they’re getting a second opinion here, I nod and silently hope they bring the discharge summary back in something smaller than a novella.
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago225 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611ChicagoPeds world: tiny lungs, giant decisions. Every time I’m here I’m reminded that kids tolerate insults adults would code over—and that parents can hold more anxiety than any ICU can monitor.
International Museum of Surgical Science1524 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60610ChicagoHistory of medicine with less charting and more bones. Great for perspective: however bad your day, at least you’re not doing pre-anesthesia neurosurgery with a hand drill and optimism.
Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care West Loop171 N Aberdeen St Suite 100, Chicago, IL 60607ChicagoFor when it’s clearly not an ICU issue but also clearly not a “just hydrate” situation. Good safety valve for West Loop lungs that mistook CrossFit for a warm-up.
University of Chicago Medicine5841 S Maryland Ave, Chicago, IL 60637ChicagoHyde Park academic fortress. When a paper comes out changing how we treat something pulmonary and annoying, odds are good someone here helped write it while I was just trying to get through sign-out.
