Most of my life happens on trains and buses, but I still orbit these car spots like a satellite with a Clipper card. They’re where I test-drive unrealistic life choices, drop off my very realistic 11-year-old hatchback, or grab a rental for a last‑minute Tahoe scheme. None of this is a ranking—more like a breadcrumb trail of places where the smell of rubber and coffee means I’m either about to leave town, or finally, finally get that warning light turned off.

BMW of San FranciscoSoMaNew and used dealership1675 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103San FranciscoThe big glass showroom feels like wandering through a very expensive, very quiet art gallery where everything happens to have 300 horsepower.Duck in early on a weekday, grab a coffee nearby, and wander the lot pretending I definitely know the difference between all the trim levels.
Tesla San Francisco - Van NessCathedral Hill / Van NessEV showroom and service center999 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109San FranciscoThat stretch of Van Ness used to be peak old-school Auto Row; now it’s this bright white EV spaceship parked between the ghosts of gas dealerships.Stop by on a lunch break, sit in a Model 3, and quietly calculate how many burritos I’d have to give up to make the payment pencil out.
Ted & Al’s Service CenterHaight-AshburyFull-service neighborhood garage624 Stanyan St, San Francisco, CA 94117San FranciscoIt’s wedged right where the Haight starts to turn into Golden Gate Park, so you get this funny mix of road-trip Subarus and local daily drivers.Drop the car, then go walk the Panhandle and overthink whether it’s finally time to deal with that mystery rattle.
City Rent-A-CarUnion Square / DowntownIndependent car rental321 Mason St, San Francisco, CA 94102San FranciscoSmaller than the airport chains, so pickup feels less like you’re entering a timeshare presentation and more like borrowing a car from that one organized friend.Grab a compact or small SUV here on a Friday afternoon, crawl out of downtown traffic, and see how far I can get before the playlist runs out.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car – Fisherman’s WharfFisherman’s WharfRental branch350 Beach St, San Francisco, CA 94133San FranciscoIf you time it right, your first five minutes with the car are this surreal drive past tourists and sea lions before you pop onto the Embarcadero.Early pickup, windows cracked for the bay air, straight over the Golden Gate before the bridge traffic remembers it lives here.
Tenth & Harrison Car WashSoMaSelf-service car wash1394 Harrison St, San Francisco, CA 94103San FranciscoOpen 24 hours, which means you’re just as likely to see a dusty adventure rig as a rideshare driver squeezing in a 1 a.m. rinse.Show up off-peak with a podcast in my ears, pretend I know what I’m doing with the foam brush, and leave feeling like a slightly more responsible adult.
Lombard Street GarageMarina / Cow HollowPublic parking garage2055 Lombard St, San Francisco, CA 94123San FranciscoIt’s the rare SF garage that feels almost civilized—clear signage, EV chargers, and just enough height to keep you from flinching every time you drive in.Park here for a weekend, wander Chestnut and the waterfront on foot, and come back to the car only when the parking ticket starts to look threatening.
