Les repaires des concerts et des vinyles

Nights off from CT scanners and waiting-room dramas go one of two ways: I’m either horizontal on the sofa with Corrie or stood in a dark room wondering if I should’ve worn better shoes. Manchester makes the second option very easy. This is where I actually go for live music and record hunting when I’m not stuck on a late shift or babysitting the linac. Expect sticky floors, Northern Quarter queues and at least one patient’s cousin at the bar.

Band on the Wall25 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JZManchesterIf I could prescribe venues on the NHS, I’d start here. Sounds great, never feels too massive, and the bookings are reliably interesting rather than ‘lads from work started a band’ grim.
YES38 Charles Street, Manchester M1 7DBManchesterFour floors of distraction. Pink Room for gigs, roof terrace when the Manc rain accidentally stops. I’ve gone from free jazz to banging club set here in one night and still made it to a Sunday early shift. Just.
The Deaf Institute135 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HEManchesterThat upstairs room with the mirrorball and wallpaper makes everyone’s Instagram look cooler than their actual life. Good for sweaty indie nights and wondering if your ENT consultant is also in the crowd.
Gorilla54–56 Whitworth Street West, Manchester M1 5WWManchesterArches, trains overhead, proper sound. Feels like the right level of ‘I go to gigs’ without needing earplugs and a tetanus booster. Handy stumble to Oxford Road when you realise last trains are a thing.
Albert Hall27 Peter Street, Manchester M2 5QRManchesterLooks like you’re going to a sermon, actually you’re there to get emotional over a band from 2005. Balconies, stained glass, acoustics that make you forgive the bar queue.
New Century34 Hanover Street, Manchester M4 4AHManchesterMid-century time warp in the best way. Retro ceiling, clear sightlines, and you can actually move your arms. I’ve done straight from late shift to gig here – the adrenaline covers the lack of sleep.
Night & Day Café26 Oldham Street, Manchester M1 1JNManchesterClassic Northern Quarter sweatbox. Half the people at any given gig seem to be in a band themselves. Perfect for pretending you’re still 19 and have zero responsibilities and no parking permit to renew.
SOUP31–33 Spear Street, Manchester M1 1DFManchesterBasement energy, Northern Quarter chaos upstairs. Excellent if you like your line-ups a bit weirder and don’t mind emerging at midnight smelling of fog machine and someone else’s IPA.
Eastern Bloc Records5A Stevenson Square, Manchester M1 1DNManchesterDance and electronic heads’ natural habitat. Great coffee, better basslines. I come here when I’m pretending I still have the stamina for a full night at the White Hotel after a 12-hour shift.
Vinyl Exchange18 Oldham Street, Manchester M1 1JNManchesterCrate-digging heaven. You go in for one £8 LP, emerge an hour later with a stack and no idea what you’re eating for tea. Northern Quarter rite of passage, basically.
